Nana Aneba’s

latest single “Hummingbird” is a sound so different from what is deemed normal coming out from the city of Toronto. It takes on a new tone for what people associate romance music to sound like making it memorable for its new approach. Its melodic backtrack paired with the slow deep tone of Aneba’s vocals amplifies the push for emotion that can be heard throughout the song. Making you feel what he does, giving the listener a new emotional experience of what it feels to be in love and even what it means to fall out of love as well.

The key standouts can be found in both the voice as well as the melody, seeing how both are unique from what is expected of the city. The slowed-down vocals create a strong sense of ambiance that takes the listener away from reality, almost acting as an escape pushing them into relaxation and a greater feeling of meditation and calm. It's very clear there's a strong sense of focus that went into how the tone of the vocals would tie the melody together to create raw emotion for both the artist as well as the listener. The vocals take you away from just hearing a song it allows you an escape and a clear two minutes to feel what is meant to be felt.

Melody as well as the beat is often forgotten by artists as they choose to highlight vocals but this was not forgotten by Aneba when crafting the perfect sound to tie his song and create it as a whole. The slow melodic tone often seen in more R&B and Soul tracks takes a new twist as it feels like he is creating his own category with his newly defined sound. The sound is different from what I have become accustomed to and makes me want to dive deeper into the unknown of this new genre and melody. As the title describes, the melody brings you into a beauty that can only be experienced in nature. Something so calm and poetic that makes you feel like you are experiencing modern-day art and not just a song.

This is a song you listen to with your eyes closed with an open heart. The lyrics define how even though love is strong, there are times you have to let go of yourself and the other person to find peace elsewhere. It is short but it has a greater impact than is expected to be heard from a two-minute song. Stating “Yet the whistle from the end loves you more than I could”, the chemistry of love and heartbreak is undefined and unfiltered… it's raw, it's beautiful.

With this being his first track it stands as a shining standout amongst the genre as well as in the overall sound that Toronto offers. It's new and unexpected, it brings out raw emotions that tend to be hidden away in people's hearts and that's what makes it a big standout. The city hides from love or tries to approach it with a more rap aesthetic never fully capturing the essence of the struggle that love brings. Hummingbird creates a space that not only highlights the hardships and struggles of love but embraces the beauty that comes from love. It's slow, strong, and unapologetic in its melody and lyrics. It's a very strong start from this Aneba that pushes to expand and create a new genre for Toronto to be known for, a breakthrough to capture the masses and break away from the everyday norm.
